Ninhydrin is a very effective reagent for paper and some other porous
surfaces. It reacts with amino acids and possibly some other components
in fingerprints. It produces visible latent fingerprints on surfaces
such as cheques, paper documents, bank notes, wood etc.
Simple to use and cost effective as it does not require any additional
light sources for examination. Reacts with blood and may be used for
developing blood contaminated fingerprints. If used after DFO additional
fingerprints may be developed.
Ninhydrin can be used to develop blood contaminated fingerprints on
porous and non-porous surfaces. Fingerprints developed with ninhydrin
can be made fluorescent by application of zinc chloride.
